The Staff

Take a close look at the resumes of each of our assistant coaches, and you will see a common theme; seven of the nine worked with Coach Cut at Ole Miss.  Looks like Cut has done a good job gettting the old band back together!

Offense

Ron Middleton - Associate Head Coach/Special Teams/Tight Ends

Ron Middleton comes to Duke after spending 2007 coaching the tight ends and special teams at Alabama.  Before this Middleton was an assistant coach with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers from 2004-06.  Middleton coached the tight ends from 1999-2001 and the running backs from 2002-03 at Ole Miss under Coach Cut.

Kurt Roper - Offensive Coordinator/Quarterbacks

Kurt Roper has followed Coach Cut from Tennessee (1996-98) to Ole Miss (1999-2004) to Tennessee (2006-07) now to Duke.  Roper coached the quarterbacks all six years he was at Ole Miss, and also served as the passing game coordinator from 2002-04.  In 2005 Roper was the quarterbacks coach at Kentucky.

Matt Luke - Running Game Coordinator/Offensive Line

Matt Luke spent the last two years at Tennessee, acting as the recruiting coordinator, coaching the tight ends, and assisting with the offensive line from 2006-07.  Luke's prior experience also includes two stints at Ole Miss with Coach Cut (2002-2005 as tight ends/offensive line coach and 1999 as student assistant coach) and working at Murray State from 2000-01 as the offensive line coach.

Zac Roper - Recruiting Coordinator/Running Backs

Zac Roper arrives in Durham having coached the kicking game at Cornell from 2005-2007.  Roper workd as graduate administrative aide and graduate assistant coach under Coach Cut from 2001-04.  Zac Roper is the younger brother of Kurt.

Scottie Montgomery - Wide Receivers

We here at DFR remember Scottie Montgomery well from his days as a standout receiver for the Blue Devils from 1996-99, twice earning team MVP honors (1998 & 1999).  Montgomery played for the Denver Broncos from 2000-02 and for the Oakland Raiders in 2003.  Montgomery has since worked as an assistant at Duke, and he is the only member of Ted Roof's staff to remain at Duke.

Defense

Mike MacIntyre - Defensive Coordinator

Mike MacIntyre joins the Duke staff after spending five years in the NFL (Dallas Cowboys 2003-06, New York Jets 2007).  Prior to his NFL experience,  MacIntyre was an asistant to Coach Cut at Ole Miss, working there from 1999-2002.

Marion Hobby - Defensive Coordinator/Defensive Line

Marion Hobby comes to Duke after spending two years in the NFL as the defensive line coach of the New Orleans Saints.  In 2005 Hobby was an assistant at Clemson.  From 1999-2004, Hobby served on the staff of Coach Cut at Ole Miss.

Jim Collins - Linebackers

Jim Collins spent 2007 at Memphis as the cornerbacks coach.  Collins worked at Marshall as the Defensive Coordinator from 2005-06 and in 2004 as the defensive back coach.  Yet another Duke coach with NFL experience, Collins coached the linebackers and assisted with the special teams for the Washington Redskins from 2002-03 .  And as a feather in his cap, Collins worked with the Ol' Ball Coach - Steve Spurrier - at Florida from 1990-2001 and at Duke in 1989!

Derek Jones - Defensive Backs

Derek Jones was on the coaching staff of Memphis in 2007, and in 2006 was the conerbacks coach at Tulsa.  From 2000-04 Jones was the cornerbacks coach at Murray State.  In 1999 Jones served as a defensive graduate assistant to Coach Cut at Ole Miss.  Coach Cut has commented on Jones' talent in recruiting, and expects quite a bit of help from him in this department.
